I am in year 10 and I am going to do two weeks work experience next year, what happens – do I have to find my own place to go to?

Work Experience is usually a placement in employer’s premises where you would carry out particular tasks or duties, like an employee would, but with the emphasis on the learning aspects of the tasks. The placement may be for one or two weeks. Often the whole of a school Year group, such as Year 10 would all go out on Work Experience to different local employers at the same time. There are lots of benefits from doing work experience; you can find out more about your own skills: find out about different job roles in a company; get a feel for the demands of working life; get an employer report or reference; you may even get a part time or holiday job from it! You should be able to make your choices on line for your work experience placement and your school will help you to do this. Connexions Northamptonshire manages the process including all the Health and Safety aspects. Some employers like to interview you before you start. Although there is a system in place for you to choose a work experience placement on line, you may want to find your own, particularly if have a specific work place/career in mind and there is nothing suitable on the online system. If you find somewhere you would like to go and that is willing to take you, you will need to tell your school, and they will contact Connexions about getting the essential health and safety checks carried out before you start.
