 In the press

I'm at college studying a BTEC National Diploma in Business. I haven't decided what to do when I finish this summer. I really want to start earning some money - how do I find a job?

I assume that you want to work in the field of business, as this is the course that you have been studying. However if this is something you are not clear about or are not sure which area of business to focus on then you may want to make an appointment for a careers interview at Connexions or an appointment to complete a careers questionnaire like Pathfinder or Fast tomato, which can help to identify job ideas and suggestions. Whilst it is not easy looking for work it is easier if you know what you are looking for and where to focus your energies.

There are a number of things that you can do to look for a job including:

  • Firstly register for work with Connexions, they can send you vacancies by email and you can also look at vacancies on line at http://www.4you2.org.uk click on jobs4you. Also register for work with the Job Centre and Specialist Employment Agencies for Administration/Accountancy and other business related jobs (Connexions can help with a list of these).
  • Look in the local paper - most papers focus on jobs specifically in one of their editions each week e.g. Evening Telegraph and Chronicle and Echo have lots of job adverts every Thursday.
  • Send speculative letters and a CV to employers that you would like to work for.
  • Use any contacts you have (family or friends) who are working in companies that you would like to work for (ask them if they can ask if there are any vacancies going).
  • Depending on where you want to work jobs are also advertised on company notice boards and shop windows.
  • Temporary work can also sometimes be a route into a full time job.
