Connexions offers three types of services for young people
13-19:
self-help, and 1-1 and personal development
Our self-help services
Drop-in sessions offer information, advice and signposting
on a range of issues and are available in a variety of locations
such as: school, college (or similar) at advertised times
in the institution’s Connexions Access Points, office
based Connexions Access Points – for young people not
in education and other locations frequented by young people,
eg youth clubs, community centres, training providers etc.
Locally, Connexions Northamptonshire has a freephone number
for 13-19 year olds to contact our Access Points : 0800 73
13 2 19. Nationally Connexions Direct, 080 800 13 2 19, a
telephone helpline, is open 8.00 am – 2.00 am, 7 days
a week.

The Connexions Northamptonshire web site for young people

Connexions Northamptonshire produces materials to help young
people with an extensive range of issues. For example: career
planning, educational choices, life style, finance, health,
housing etc. Here’s some examples:
Xplore – the annual leaflet for year 11 on choosing
options for post-16 learning
Kangaroo 3X – the multi-media CD Rom
Year 9 and 11 Organisers – including local information
on help lines and services for young people
Connexions also runs and attends local events, eg: annual
HE Conference, Balloon Festival where staff can be consulted
Obtaining 1-1 support
Personal Advisers can offer case-loaded, 1-1 support on a
range of issues. This allows ongoing contact and support and
is intended to ensure that young people who require more than
a self-help service are appropriately supported. These young
people would include those with a Statement of Special Education
Need, young parents or those leaving public care for example.
1-1 support from the PA may also take place in co-operation
with support from other agencies. In such cases practitioners
will agree with the young person which agency will be the
Lead Worker. We are keen to promote a collaborative multi-agency
approach for young people with multiple barriers.
1-1 support is accessed by young people by referral –
either self-referral or by referral from the educational establishment,
training provider, agency or employer. Connexions DES operates
a Clearing House system to assess and manage the appropriateness
of all in-coming referrals and allocate work to PAs. Where
appropriate, a 1-1 service will be offered to the young person.
In some cases Connexions DES may not be the appropriate service
and will advise the referrer which service to contact.
Opportunities for Personal Development
Personal Advisers help with personal development in their
working relationships with young people. PAs assist young
people with personal development and ability to manage their
own decisions and lives. In addition, where appropriate, they
signpost young people to activities which will benefit their
development.
Our Youth Involvement Team offers a comprehensive and stimulating
range of opportunities for 13 -19 year olds to be involved
in activities to support their personal development. There
are many different opportunities, for example, young people’s
forums, consultation activities, product development, training
for and involvement in recruitment and selection panels, activities
focussed on democracy and citizenship.
