Teenagers win vouchers at ‘What now’ information day - 05.11.07

What Now EventThe ‘What Now’ event was held on 20th September to give recent school leavers and young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) the chance to think about their future and to raise awareness of opportunities available to them.

Young people still unsure about what to do next were invited to take part in the jointly organised information day at The Abbey Centre in Daventry Town Centre. The event was organised as part of the NEET Action Forum (Not in Education, Employment or Training) by Connexions, Millennium Volunteers, Youth Involvement Team, Northamptonshire Training & Development Partnership, Northampton and Moulton Colleges. Millennium Volunteers were involved in designing the marketing fliers and registering young people on the day.

Over 20 young people from the Daventry and South Northants attended the event. The event was represented by training and education providers as well as agencies providing support to young people (health, housing, transport and work experience).

Following two prize draws the winners from Towcester and Daventry each won £25 vouchers. One of the prize winners Louise, a recent college leaver joined the Volunteer Bureau on their Brushes and Spades Project.

Kala Chauhan, Connexions Personal Adviser said: “ The event was organised to reduce NEETs by raising their awareness of college courses, job or training and volunteering opportunities.”

Some positive outcomes on the day include: 1 young person started a college course in plumbing and another in carpentry; 1 joined an e2e programme; 1 registered for a project run by the Volunteer Bureau; 3 joined the Millennium Volunteers. Other young people also made a positive step by attending the event and speaking to Connexions. Personal Adviser will follow up contact with all young people who attended the event.

Young people said:

"It helped me understand things."
"It helped me understand more clearly about jobs and college."
"Very good lots of useful information."
"It helped me to find where to train and gave me some ideas."
